Robert John Crooks was born in Girard, Ohio on April 4, 1923. He attended Girard High School, graduating in 1941. Robert attended Ohio State University before enlisting in the Army Air Corps in February, 1943. He contracted malaria in North Africa waiting to be stationed in Cerignola, Italy. Most of Robert’s story has been lost, but his family reports that his plane was shot down over Hungary and that he had been a POW in Kriegsgefangenenlager Der Luftwaffe Nr.4, Stalag Luft IV.

Following World War II Robert worked for State Farm Insurance for thirty six years. He married Roselyn Siber on April7, 1951, and they had two children, John Robert Crooks (born July 27, 1953) and Kimberly Kay Crooks (born September 29, 1955). Robert died on December 18, 1988 in Tucson, Arizona and was buried in East Lawn Palms Cemetery.
